Discord profile banner requirements
| Use | File size | Dimensions | Formats | Status and source |

| Profile banner Discord Nitro | < 10 MB | min 680×240 px (some pages: 600×240) | PNG, JPEG, GIF | Verified, two figures Discord Support: Custom Profiles Last checked: 2026-10-28 |
- Profile banner: Under 10 MB, minimum 680×240 px. Some Discord pages say 600×240.
- Profile banner: User reports (not official): banner GIFs close to 10 MB can still fail after Discord's crop step; reducing the width to roughly 540 px or less has helped some people.
Last checked: 2026-10-28. KB and MB are treated as 1024-based (256 KB = 262,144 bytes). Platforms rarely say which they mean, so the tool aims a few percent below the stated limit. Limits are rechecked every quarter.
How to make a Discord banner GIF
- Add a GIF, picture or video. Drop a GIF, PNG, JPEG, WebP, MP4, WebM or MOV file. It is read on your device and never uploaded. A video loads the converter once, with a progress bar.
- Frame the banner. Drag the bright box over the part of the picture you want, and use the zoom to keep a smaller part. Turn on the avatar overlay to keep faces, logos and text out of the area your profile picture covers. For a video, set the start and end of the clip.
- Choose the size and the target. 680×240 is the Discord minimum and the right choice for most banners. 1360×480 is twice as sharp and makes a bigger file. The target defaults to 9.5 MB, a little under Discord's 10 MB limit. Open the advanced options to set the colors or the lossy level yourself.
- Make the banner and download it. Press Make banner. The result is checked against Discord's size and minimum dimensions with a green or red badge. Download the file, then upload it in your Discord profile settings with a Nitro account.
Discord profile banner size: 680×240 and the 17:6 shape
Discord's profile help page asks for a banner of at least 680×240 pixels. That is a ratio of 17:6, about 2.83 to 1, which is wider than the 5:2 shape many guides repeat. An older Discord blog post still says 600×240, so the limits table above marks the minimum as disputed. A picture with any other shape is cropped by Discord, which is why this tool crops first and lets you decide what stays.
1360×480 is exactly twice the minimum. Choose it when you want a sharper banner on large or high-resolution screens and the file still fits under 10 MB. A 2× GIF has four times the pixels of a 680×240 one, so it only fits when the loop is short or simple. If it does not fit, the tool makes the 680×240 version instead and tells you.
Every Discord limit in one place: Discord file size limits.
Keep the subject away from your avatar
Your profile picture sits over the lower-left corner of the banner. The dashed circle in the crop box shows roughly where, so you can slide the box or zoom until the face, logo or text is clear of it. The circle is an approximation drawn from the way Discord's profile card looks. The exact position depends on the screen and on Discord's current design, so look at the banner once on your own profile after you upload it.
Getting a GIF banner under 10 MB
Discord accepts a banner under 10 MB as a PNG, JPEG or animated GIF. The tool aims for 9.5 MB so that a rounding difference between the two meanings of "MB" cannot push the file over. A banner is small in pixels, so its size comes mostly from the number of frames and colors.
- Use a shorter loop. Every second adds frames. Three to eight seconds is usually enough for a banner.
- Lower the frame rate. 15 frames per second looks smooth for most banners and is much lighter than 25.
- Allow fewer colors or a light lossy level. In the advanced options, 128 colors or Light lossy rarely shows on a wide banner and saves a lot.
- Stay at 680×240. The 2× size is sharper but needs four times the pixels.
When the GIF is still too big
If the first result is over the target, the tool optimises the GIF without loss, then adds lossy compression, reduces the colors, and finally removes frames. It keeps the banner's size fixed, so the crop you chose is never changed. If it still cannot get under the limit, the badge turns red and the tool suggests a shorter range or a lower frame rate. For a GIF that is already the right shape, the Discord GIF compressor has the same compressor with presets for emoji, stickers and chat uploads.
Make a banner from a video
Drop an MP4, WebM or MOV file, drag the start and end handles to the part you want, and pick a frame rate. The video is cropped to the banner box and converted to a GIF by ffmpeg running in your browser, then compressed to the target. For other sizes, or a GIF without cropping, use the video to GIF converter. Clips of a few seconds fit most easily.
Still banners and Nitro
A PNG or JPEG banner is a still picture. Choose a still file and the tool gives you a PNG at the banner size. Discord lists profile banners as a Nitro feature, and Nitro Basic does not include them, so an animated or still banner needs a full Nitro subscription. This tool only prepares the file; it never uploads anything and cannot get around that requirement.

Your files stay on your device
The crop, the conversion and the compression all run in your browser. Pictures are processed by the same compressor as the other TinyGIF tools, and videos by ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a Discord profile banner?
At least 680×240 px, a 17:6 shape. Use 1360×480 for extra sharpness if the file stays under 10MB. Discord crops any other shape, so crop to 17:6 first.
What is the Discord banner file size limit?
10MB for a PNG, JPG or animated GIF. This tool aims for 9.5MB so the file is accepted even if the platform counts a megabyte slightly differently.
Do I need Nitro for a GIF banner?
Yes, full Nitro. Nitro Basic can't upload a banner image or GIF. This tool prepares the file but cannot upload it or skip the requirement.
Why is my banner cropped wrong?
Discord crops to its banner shape. Crop to 17:6 first, as this tool does, and keep key content away from the lower-left area where your avatar sits.
Can I turn a video into a Discord banner?
Yes. Upload an MP4, WebM or MOV file, pick a clip with the start and end handles, and export a GIF at 680×240. Short clips stay under 10MB most easily.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser, so the picture or video never leaves your device. Only the converter itself is downloaded the first time you use a video.
