Discord GIF size limits (2026)

• Custom emoji: Under 256 KB (the developer docs write 256 KiB). Uploaded up to 128×128 px and displayed at 32×32.
• Sticker: Exactly 320×320 px and no larger than 512 KB.
• Sticker: Sources disagree on animated format: the support FAQ lists APNG, while a Discord blog post says APNG or GIF. This tool outputs APNG by default and lets you switch to GIF.
• Profile banner: Under 10 MB, minimum 680×240 px. Some Discord pages say 600×240.
• Profile banner: User reports (not official): banner GIFs close to 10 MB can still fail after Discord's crop step; reducing the width to roughly 540 px or less has helped some people.
• Profile avatar: Square image of roughly 200×200 px or larger, under 10 MB. The exact minimum is not stated on a help-center page.
• Server avatar: Server-specific avatars are limited to 8 MB.
• Chat upload: The support article says 10 MB per file and mentions that Discord is experimenting with limits. Some third-party sources say 20 MB since 2025. We have not verified 20 MB, so this tool defaults to 10 MB.

Last checked: 2026-10-16. KB and MB are treated as 1024-based (256 KB = 262,144 bytes). Platforms rarely say which they mean, so the tool aims a few percent below the stated limit. Limits are rechecked every quarter.

How to compress a GIF for Discord

1. Choose a preset. Pick Emoji, Sticker, Avatar, Server avatar, Banner or Chat upload. The preset fills in Discord's size limit and, where Discord fixes the dimensions, the pixel size. Use Custom KB for any other limit.
2. Drop your GIF. Drag the file in, paste it, or tap Choose GIF on your phone. Compression starts at once and runs inside your browser, so the file is never uploaded.
3. Check the badge and download. A green badge means the result passes the preset's limit. Compare it with the original, then download. If the badge is red, the message says which rule failed and what to try next.

Why is my GIF too big for Discord?

A GIF stores every frame as its own indexed-color image, so the file grows with three things: how many frames it has, how many colors each frame uses, and how many pixels each frame covers. Discord caps the finished file in kilobytes, so the fix is to trim one or more of those three.

Too many frames

A 3-second clip at 30 frames per second has 90 frames. Dropping every other frame roughly halves the frame data, and the animation still lasts the same time because the delay of each removed frame is added to the frame that stays.

Too many colors

Each frame can use up to 256 colors. Lowering that to 128 or 64, and allowing a little lossy compression, removes detail the eye rarely misses, especially at emoji size.

Dimensions too large

Pixel count grows with the square of the width. Halving width and height cuts the pixel data to about a quarter. A custom emoji is uploaded at up to 128×128, so a 400×400 source spends most of its bytes on detail Discord will not show.

Tips for each Discord upload type

Emoji

Choose the Emoji preset. Discord wants custom emoji under 256 KB, uploaded at up to 128×128 px and displayed at 32×32. The tool keeps your aspect ratio, or crops to a square if you ask it to.

Sticker

Discord's sticker FAQ lists APNG for animated stickers, so the Sticker preset exports a 320×320 APNG of 512 KB or less. A Discord blog post says APNG or GIF, so the output can be switched to GIF if you prefer. This conflict is listed in the limits table above.

Uploading stickers needs a server Boost level that unlocks sticker slots; check Discord's official sticker FAQ for the current rules. If you only need the conversion, use GIF to APNG.

Avatar and banner

Animated avatars and banners need Nitro. A banner must be under 10 MB and at least 680×240 px; some Discord pages say 600×240, so both figures are shown in the table.

User reports, which are not official guidance, say that banner GIFs close to 10 MB can still fail after Discord's crop step and that bringing the width down to roughly 540 px has helped. The Banner preset has an optional safer mode for that, but 540 px is below the stated 680 px minimum, so only use it if the upload keeps failing.
