  • Static emote (auto-scaling): One square PNG from 112×112 to 4096×4096, up to 1 MB. Twitch scales it down to the three required sizes.
  • Static emote (manual sizes): Three PNGs at 28×28, 56×56 and 112×112.
  • Static emote (manual sizes): The subscriber emote guide says each file must be under 100 KB while the general emote rules only mention 1 MB. This tool checks against the stricter 100 KB value.
  • Animated emote (auto-scaling): One square GIF from 112×112 to 4096×4096, up to 1 MB and at most 60 frames.
  • Animated emote (auto-scaling): The first frame is used as the thumbnail. Animations must not flash more than 3 times per second. Emotes go through manual review.
  • Animated emote (manual sizes): Three GIFs at 28×28, 56×56 and 112×112, each up to 512 KB and at most 60 frames.

Last checked: 2026-10-23. KB and MB are treated as 1024-based (256 KB = 262,144 bytes). Platforms rarely say which they mean, so the tool aims a few percent below the stated limit. Limits are rechecked every quarter.

How to make Twitch emotes

  1. Choose static or animated. Static emotes are exported as PNG, animated ones as GIF. The tool picks a sensible default from your file, and you can change it.
  2. Add your art. Drop a square image if you can. If it is not square, crop or pad it. Optionally turn on sharpening, which helps the 28×28 version stay readable.
  3. Download all three sizes. Get 28×28, 56×56 and 112×112 files, plus an optional larger master for Twitch's auto-scaling upload. Each file shows whether it passes the size, shape and frame rules.

Auto-scaling or manual upload

Twitch offers two ways to upload. With auto-scaling you upload one square image from 112×112 up to 4096×4096 and Twitch creates the smaller versions. With manual mode you upload three files at 28×28, 56×56 and 112×112 yourself. This tool can produce both: the three sizes, and one larger master for auto-scaling.

File size and frame rules

For animated emotes in auto-scaling mode the single GIF must be 1 MB or less. In manual mode each of the three GIFs must be 512 KB or less. Animated emotes can have at most 60 frames. For static emotes the general rules mention 1 MB, while the subscriber emote guide says each manual-mode file should be under 100 KB. The tool checks against the stricter 100 KB value and shows both numbers in the table above.

Things Twitch reviews by hand

Twitch uses the first frame of an animated emote as its thumbnail, so make sure that frame reads well on its own. Animations also must not flash more than 3 times in one second. Our brightness check can flag obvious cases, but a pass here does not guarantee approval. Emotes are reviewed by people.

If an animated emote is still too large, run it through the GIF compressor at 1MB first, or see the general emote resizer for other platforms.

Frequently asked questions

How many frames can a Twitch animated emote have?

At most 60 frames. If your GIF has more, this tool removes frames evenly and keeps the overall timing.

What file size can a Twitch animated emote be?

In auto-scaling mode the single GIF can be up to 1MB. In manual mode each of the three GIFs can be up to 512KB.

Do Twitch emotes need to be square?

Yes. Both the auto-scaling image and the manual 28, 56 and 112 pixel files are square, so the tool asks you to crop or pad any other shape.

Is there a limit on flashing in Twitch emotes?

Twitch does not allow animations that flash more than 3 times in one second. This tool checks frame brightness as a warning, but Twitch makes the final decision.

Which frame does Twitch use as the thumbnail for animated emotes?

The first frame. Put the clearest pose of your emote on frame one.
