GIF to APNG Converter

Turn an animated GIF into an APNG, or use the Discord sticker preset to hit 320×320 and 512 KB in one go.

Files never leave your device.

Sticker: ≤512 KB, 320×320. Requires: A server Boost level that has free sticker slots (check Discord's current sticker slot rules). Exactly 320×320 px and no larger than 512 KB. Sources disagree on animated format: the support FAQ lists APNG, while a Discord blog post says APNG or GIF. This tool outputs APNG by default and lets you switch to GIF.

Discord's own pages disagree about animated GIF stickers, so APNG is the safe choice.

How to convert a GIF to APNG

  1. Choose a preset. Discord Sticker sets 320×320 and a 512 KB limit. No limit keeps the original size and the full quality. Custom KB lets you enter your own limit.
  2. Add your GIF. Animated WebP files also work in browsers that can decode them. The GIF is decoded frame by frame, including transparency and disposal rules.
  3. Download the APNG. The result is a .png file that animates. If it is over the limit, the tool reduces the palette first, then the frame rate, and asks before shortening the clip.

GIF and APNG compared

A GIF frame can use at most 256 colors and a pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque. APNG is an extension of PNG that supports 24-bit color and 8-bit transparency, so gradients and soft edges look cleaner. The cost is file size: APNGs of the same animation are often larger than GIFs, which matters for limits like Discord's 512 KB for stickers.

Why the file ends in .png

An APNG file uses the .png extension. Software that does not support animation shows only the first frame. That is normal and does not mean the conversion failed. Open the file in a web browser to see it animate.

Discord stickers: APNG or GIF?

Discord's sticker FAQ lists APNG for animated stickers, while a Discord blog post says APNG or GIF. This tool defaults to APNG. If you want to stay in GIF, use the Sticker preset of the Discord GIF compressor and switch the output to GIF. Sticker uploads also need a server Boost level with free sticker slots.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a GIF to APNG?

Drop the GIF into the tool, choose a preset, and download the .png result. The conversion runs in your browser and the file is never uploaded.

What size must a Discord sticker be?

Exactly 320×320 pixels and no larger than 512KB. The Discord Sticker preset sets both for you.

Why does my APNG only show one frame?

Some image viewers do not support animated PNG and show the first frame only. Open the file in a web browser to check the animation.

Why is my APNG larger than the original GIF?

APNG stores full-color frames while GIF stores indexed colors, so the APNG is often bigger. Reduce colors, lower the frame rate or shorten the clip to shrink it.

Does the converter keep transparency?

Yes. The tool decodes GIF transparency and disposal rules correctly and writes them into the APNG frames.
