A gentle sharpen after shrinking, which keeps thin lines readable at 28 px. Leave it off if edges look harsh.Discord emoji requirements

- Custom emoji: Under 256 KB (the developer docs write 256 KiB). Uploaded up to 128×128 px and displayed at 32×32.
Last checked: 2026-10-16. KB and MB are treated as 1024-based (256 KB = 262,144 bytes). Platforms rarely say which they mean, so the tool aims a few percent below the stated limit. Limits are rechecked every quarter.
How to resize an image for a Discord emoji
- Add your image or GIF. PNG, GIF, WebP and JPEG all work. Large images are fine; the tool scales them down for you.
- Make it square. Crop by dragging the selection, or pad with transparent edges so nothing is cut off.
- Check and download. The result is 128×128 and the tool keeps it under 256 KB, shrinking animated files if needed. Preview it at the 32×32 size Discord displays, then download.
Discord emoji basics
Discord custom emoji accept JPEG, PNG, GIF and WEBP files under 256 KB. They are uploaded at up to 128×128 pixels and shown in chat at 32×32. Because they are shown so small, simple shapes, thick outlines and high contrast read better than fine detail.
If your file is an animated GIF that is still too big, the Discord GIF compressor has an Emoji preset with a few more controls, and compress GIF to 256KB explains the budget in detail.
Static or animated
A still image is exported as PNG. An animated GIF stays a GIF, with colors and frames reduced only as far as needed to get under the limit. The 128×128 size already removes most of the weight; if the clip is long, trimming the duration is the most effective way to save space.
Why the checks use a safety margin
Discord does not say whether 256 KB means 256,000 or 262,144 bytes, and developer documentation uses KiB. The tool counts 1 KB as 1024 bytes and aims a few percent below the limit so the file still passes if Discord measures it differently.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a Discord emoji be?
Upload it at up to 128×128 pixels and keep the file under 256KB. Discord displays custom emoji at 32×32.
Which file types can I use for Discord emoji?
Discord accepts JPEG, PNG, GIF and WEBP files for custom emoji.
Why should a Discord emoji be 128×128 if it is shown at 32×32?
Discord scales emoji down for display, so extra pixels mostly help the emoji stay sharp on high-density screens. Past 128×128 Discord will not use them.
Can I keep my emoji animated?
Yes. Upload a GIF and the tool keeps the animation while shrinking it to fit. If it is still over the limit, shorten the clip.
Does this work for Discord stickers too?
No. Stickers are 320×320 and up to 512KB. Use the Sticker preset in the Discord GIF compressor, or GIF to APNG.
