Compress GIF to 512KB

Shrink a GIF to 512 KB, the ceiling for a Discord sticker and for each file of a Twitch animated emote.

Files never leave your device.

Any limit you type. The tool treats 1 MB as 1024 KB.

Aiming for 496.6 KB or less, a few percent under 512 KB to leave a safety margin.

  • Sticker: Exactly 320×320 px and no larger than 512 KB.
  • Sticker: Sources disagree on animated format: the support FAQ lists APNG, while a Discord blog post says APNG or GIF. This tool outputs APNG by default and lets you switch to GIF.
  • Animated emote (manual sizes): Three GIFs at 28×28, 56×56 and 112×112, each up to 512 KB and at most 60 frames.

How to make a GIF under 512KB

  1. Check the size box. It is already set to 512 KB. For a Twitch manual-mode emote, make the GIF square first, for example with the Twitch emote resizer.
  2. Drop your GIF. The file stays in your browser while it is compressed.
  3. Download. The result shows its size in KB and bytes. For Discord stickers, which are listed as APNG in Discord's sticker FAQ, convert with GIF to APNG.

Who needs a 512KB file

Two common cases land on 512 KB. A Discord sticker is 320×320 pixels and no larger than 512 KB. In Twitch's manual upload mode, each of the three animated emote GIFs (28×28, 56×56 and 112×112) may be up to 512 KB, with at most 60 frames.

Stickers need APNG, emotes need GIF

For stickers, Discord's sticker FAQ lists APNG for animated files, and a Discord blog post says APNG or GIF. For Twitch emotes the format is GIF. That is why the 512 KB budget shows up in two different tools: compress a GIF here for Twitch, or use the sticker preset in the Discord GIF compressor, which writes an APNG.

Getting under 512KB without ruining the loop

At 320×320 an animation of a few seconds with simple colors often fits with lossless optimization and light lossy compression. If it does not, the tool reduces colors, then frames, and merges duplicate frames before dropping any. Twitch emote frames count too: if you have more than 60 frames, the tool removes frames evenly.

Frequently asked questions

What size limit does a Discord sticker have?

A Discord sticker is 320×320 pixels and no larger than 512KB.

What is the file size limit for Twitch animated emotes?

In manual mode each of the three GIFs can be up to 512KB and can have at most 60 frames. In auto-scaling mode a single GIF can be up to 1MB.

Why does my sticker need to be APNG?

Discord's sticker FAQ lists APNG for animated stickers. A Discord blog post says APNG or GIF, so the two sources disagree; this site defaults to APNG.

Will a 512KB GIF look noticeably worse than the original?

At small sizes such as 112×112 or 320×320 the difference is usually small. If you see banding, allow a smaller size or shorten the clip.
