GIF Compressor

Type the size limit you need, drop your GIF, and get the best-looking file that still fits under it.

Files never leave your device.

Any limit you type. The tool treats 1 MB as 1024 KB.

Aiming for 993.3 KB or less, a few percent under 1 MB to leave a safety margin.

How to compress a GIF to a target size

  1. Enter the limit. Type the size in KB or MB, or use one of the quick buttons. If the site says megabytes, enter the number as shown; the tool treats 1 MB as 1024 KB and aims a few percent lower to leave a safety margin.
  2. Drop your GIF. Drag it in, paste it, or choose it from your device. The work happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
  3. Download the result. Compare the before and after, check the size shown in KB and exact bytes, then download. You can change the limit or the priority and run it again.

How the compressor reaches your target size

The tool works through a fixed list of steps and stops as soon as the file is under your limit, so you keep as much quality as possible:

  • Lossless optimization first: the same frame-differencing and palette tidy-up that tools like gifsicle do, with no visible change.
  • Lossy compression next: a controlled amount of noise in the color data, increased in steps and searched for the smallest value that fits.
  • Fewer colors: 256 down to 128, 64 and 32 colors per frame.
  • Fewer frames: duplicate frames are merged, then every other frame is dropped, and frame delays are adjusted so the animation keeps its total length.
  • Smaller dimensions: shrinking in steps of at most 90 percent per round.

Choose what to keep

Under Advanced options you can choose what the tool should protect longest: picture quality, smoothness (frame count), or size in pixels. That choice only changes the order of the color, frame and resize steps.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce the size of a GIF without losing quality?

Start with lossless optimization, then add a small amount of lossy compression and fewer colors. This tool tries those steps in that order and stops as soon as the file fits your limit.

Is the GIF compressor free, and does it add a watermark?

It is free and never adds a watermark, a countdown or a sign-up step.

Are my GIFs uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and compressed inside your browser tab and is cleared when you close or reload the page.

What happens if the GIF cannot reach my target size?

You will see which limit was missed and the best result the tool produced, clearly marked as over the target. Trimming the clip length or allowing a smaller size usually fixes it.

Why is my compressed GIF still bigger than the limit on the website?

KB and KiB differ by about 2.4 percent, and some sites re-encode uploads. Aim a few percent under the stated limit; the tool already leaves a default margin of 3 percent.
