Compress GIF to 5MB

Fit a longer GIF under 5 MB, and see which trade-offs the compressor makes along the way.

Files never leave your device.

Any limit you type. The tool treats 1 MB as 1024 KB.

Aiming for 4.85 MB or less, a few percent under 5 MB to leave a safety margin.

How to make a GIF under 5MB

  1. Check the size box. It is set to 5120 KB. Edit it if your target site uses another limit.
  2. Pick a priority. Under Advanced options, choose between keeping quality, smoothness or pixel size.
  3. Drop your GIF and download. Check the before and after details, then download.

Large GIFs are mostly pixels times frames

A 5 MB budget is generous for a short clip and tight for a long, wide one. The two things that scale the cost most are the width, because pixel count grows with its square, and the frame count. A clip twice as wide costs roughly four times as many pixels per frame.

What gets reduced, and in what order

The order is lossless optimization, lossy compression, fewer colors, fewer frames and finally smaller dimensions. Every step after the first has a visible cost, so the tool stops as soon as the result fits. If it cannot reach 5 MB, it hands you its best attempt marked as over the target so you can decide what to cut next.

Very large inputs

Big files take more memory in the browser. On phones the tool limits the size of the input and may ask to reduce the dimensions before compressing. Opening the page on a desktop browser handles bigger files.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a GIF to 5MB?

Set the size to 5120KB, drop your GIF, and the tool applies the lightest settings that get under the limit.

Why does a wider GIF take so much more space?

File size grows with the number of pixels, which is width times height, so doubling both dimensions roughly quadruples the pixel data in every frame.

What if my GIF cannot reach 5MB?

You will get the smallest result the tool could make, marked as over the target. Trim the clip or lower the size, then run it again.

Can I compress very large GIFs on my phone?

Phones have less memory, so the input limit is lower. If a file is refused, trim it first or use a desktop browser.
